Extractions & Wisdom Teeth, Limoges Dentist

What is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction involves removing a tooth from its socket in the jaw. At Limoges Dental Centre, extractions are recommended only when preserving the tooth is not possible or when keeping it may negatively affect your oral health.

There are several reasons a tooth may need to be removed. These can include extensive damage from decay or trauma, advanced gum disease, or issues related to wisdom teeth, such as infection or crowding.

In some cases, an extraction may also be part of preparing the mouth for other dental treatments, such dental implants.

Our goal is to preserve natural teeth whenever possible. When an extraction is recommended, your dentist will explain the reasons, review your options, and answer any questions you may have.

If a tooth is removed, replacement options, such as dental bridges or dentures, can be discussed as part of your ongoing care plan.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars to develop, emerging at the back of the mouth, typically when someone is between the ages of 17 and 25. Not everyone develops wisdom teeth, and for some people, they erupt without causing any concerns.

If wisdom teeth do not have enough space to come in properly, they can press against neighbouring teeth, contribute to crowding, or grow in at an angle and become only partially erupted.

Because of their location, wisdom teeth can also be harder to clean, which may increase the risk of decay, gum irritation, or infection over time.

If wisdom teeth are causing discomfort, affecting surrounding teeth, or making oral hygiene difficult, your dentist may recommend removal as part of a personalized treatment plan.

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction

Before recommending a tooth extraction, your dentist will complete an examination and review your dental images to understand the position and condition of the tooth.

They will also discuss your medical history, answer any questions you may have, and explain the procedure so you know what to expect.

At your appointment, the area around the tooth is numbed to help keep you comfortable during the extraction.

If necessary, dental sedation will be used to ensure your comfort, depending on the complexity of the extraction and individual needs.

Once the tooth is removed, your dentist will provide aftercare instructions to help support healing. These may include guidance on managing discomfort, caring for the extraction site, and knowing what signs to watch for as your mouth heals.
