Why Are Regular Adult Dental Appointments Important?

You are responsible for booking your own adult dental appointments. Your schedule doesn’t always allow you to proactively plan your next check up, so unfortunately your dental hygiene often slips through the cracks. But just like children, adults need regular dental checkups to ensure good oral health.

How Often Should You Book Adult Dental Appointments?

As a busy adult, do you typically put things off like renewing your passport, license plate stickers or even booking your adult dental appointments until you have to? Or worse,  do you wait until it’s too late?

You aren’t alone!

You may not be experiencing tooth or gum pain at the moment, but even if your teeth and gums “seem okay,” there is always a possibility of an underlying issue you may not be aware of.

When was the last time you had your teeth and mouth checked? Even for adults, dentists recommend getting a dental checkup every six months. These check ups are not only to check for problems within the mouth, but also for a cleaning in order to help prevent oral disease. If you have certain medical conditions or take certain medications that leave you with dry mouth, for example, you may need more regular dental check ups.

Your dentist will also recommend more regular visits if you are a smoker (or were a smoker), are pregnant, have diabetes or are a current cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy. Unfortunately, these circumstances leave patients with a greater risk of dental issues, including gum disease, tooth decay and oral infection. Visiting your dentist more often can help to ensure a healthy mouth and tackle any issues in a more timely manner. Staying on top of your oral health will help to avoid greater dental issues requiring root canals or other treatments.

Why Are Regular Adult Dental Appointments Important?

Regular dental check ups usually aren’t painful, are typically covered by most insurance providers and will improve your overall quality of life from preventing diseases to making your smile brighter.

Prevent gum disease. Dental cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup that cannot always be eliminated through your regular brushing and flossing alone. A professional cleaning will help to prevent the spread of bacteria in the mouth and in turn, gum disease.

Stop bad breath. Poor oral hygiene often leads to bad breath, which nobody wants to face or experience. Regular dental visits help eliminate the bacteria in your mouth that causes bad breath. Your dentist will encourage proper dental habits like mouth rinses, flossing to avoid dry mouth.

Maintain good health. Gum disease has been linked in recent years to strokes and heart attacks. Regular dental visits lower the risk of gum disease and therefore reduce the risk of more serious illnesses.

Create a whiter smile. Regular dental cleanings help to remove stains from the teeth caused by what you eat and drink. Unfortunately, some of the usual suspects are favourite like coffee, wine and soda. Regular dental cleanings mean you can enjoy some of your favourite treats while keeping your bright smile.

Avoid tooth loss. Neglecting proper oral hygiene can lead to gum disease, bone loss, and as a result, the tooth loss. Proper brushing and flossing, as well as regular dental visits, play a huge role in helping you keep all of your teeth. If you start to notice any strange symptoms or pain in your mouth, gums or teeth, contact your dentist immediately and make an appointment.
